Black Mission (or Franciscana) Figs are a popular variety of the edible fig. They were introduced to California in 1768 by the Fransiscan monks and missionaries.
The common fig bears a first crop, called the breba crop, in the spring on last season’s growth. The second crop is born in the fall on the new growth and is known as the main crop.
The Black Mission Fig is a high quality fig variety, that includes both a breba and main crop, but is considered an everbearing variety.
Olive and Fig Tapenade uses fresh Black Mission Figs, Kalamata olives, olive oil and balsamic vinegar…all the best ingredients.
Serve it as an appetizer with thinly sliced baguette or crisp crackers.
