French Toast

There is nothing like a lazy Saturday morning to indulge in some French Toast and perhaps bacon or sausage, fruit and coffee or tea.

The key to this recipe is to saturate the bread with the egg mixture.  Many times we have been disappointed with French Toast in a restaurant, where it seemed that they barely brushed either side of the bread with an egg mixture.

Good French Toast doesn’t even look like bread anymore, but more like a baked good and these are yummy.  Enjoy!

French Toast

Ingredients

  • 6 - 7 Slices Texas Toast width Italian white bread
  • 6 eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 Tsp vanilla
  • 1 Tbsp butter (to grease the griddle)

Optional

  • 1/4 cup icing sugar (to dust over the completed toast)

Directions

Heat a griddle to 350 degrees F. (you may also use a large frying pan on the stove)
Whisk the eggs, milk and vanilla together. Place in a low glass dish that will hold all the bread without overlapping pieces. Place the pieces in the dish and turn to coat all sides. Leave the bread in the egg mixture until it is soaked throughout (about 15 minutes), turning the pieces every 5 minutes or so.
Butter the surface of the griddle with the butter. Place the egg-soaked bread on the griddle. Cook for about 4 minutes on the first side and then flip the pieces over. Cook on the other side until you see the middle of the bread slightly puffed.
Remove to a clean plate and dust with icing sugar. Serve with maple syrup.
